Cate Blanchett wears a dress made from 102 old spoons on the red carpet. Is it magic? Or is it sustainable?

Cate Blanchett in Los Angeles

In 1973, a young man named Uri Geller appeared on the BBC’s The Dimbleby Talk-In program. The self-proclaimed telepath quickly became one of the most puzzling figures in pop culture as he demonstrated his supernatural ability to bend forks, spoons and knives through concentration alone. IKEA produced a stool inspired by Geller; Nintendo created a spoon-wielding Pokémon character in his image; and references to his work appear in REM songs and the film The Matrix

Swedish designer Ellen Hodakova Larsson should also put the man’s psychic powers to good use. Because Cate Blanchett was photographed at the Borderlands premiere in Los Angeles last night wearing an off-the-shoulder top made by Larsson’s team from 102 spoons, each sourced in and around Stockholm. The actress paired the look with reconstructed pants from the brand and knife-tip heels. Also worth mentioning: Emma Corrin, who wore a Hodakova little black dress made from an old belt at a screening of Deadpool & Wolverine at Comic-Con last month.

“Spoons are beautiful works of art. Each spoon has a beautiful shape, they are very sensual, and they feed your body. You put it in your mouth and of course spooning! I don’t want to explain spooning any more It makes sense…” the “magic fashion wizard” said in 2019. Now, Geller is turning his supernatural powers against the British government, having previously declared that he would use them to cause a sewage leak in Parliament if the government did not hold a second EU referendum. We hope he succeeds, but if not, a studio in Sweden needs a spiritual stitcher.
