Earlier at the Met Gala, the “Oscars of Fashion” that attracted worldwide attention, co-host Bad Bunny was hailed as the best-dressed man in the show just a few minutes into the show!
Since the public’s expectations for the celebrities’ outfits at this fashion evening are very high, the threshold for being recognized as one of the best outfits is also very high. First of all, because the theme of the 2024 exhibition is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”, it continues the imaginative style of previous years. This time, the Costume Institute sought to pay homage to some 250 pieces from the past four centuries. The inspiration behind these works is that after they were first conceived, these overly beautiful works were too delicate and fragile to be worn on the body and could only be appreciated through display, like the Sleeping Beauty in the fairy tale.
One of the pieces on display dates back to the 17th-century Elizabethan corset, as well as pieces by designers including Phillip Lim, Connor Ives, Elsa Schiaparelli and Hubert. The dress code for the 2024 MET Gala is actually “The Garden of Time,” inspired by James Graham Ballard’s story of the same name. As one of the co-hosts of this year’s Met Gala, rapper Bad Bunny clearly did his homework, wearing a custom look from Maison Margiela Artisanal Couture, the Belgian brand’s haute couture department currently headed by John Galliano. Bad Bunny not only takes top honors with this look, but it doesn’t go too overboard with the floral theme.
However, to understand Bad Bunny’s look, one needs to first explain the storyline from Ballard’s book mentioned earlier. In the book, the author tells the dystopian story of Count Alex and his wife, the Countess, an aristocratic couple who live in a villa filled with crystal flowers, but the villa is surrounded by a group of thugs who want to rob the villa. . In order to prevent this group from achieving their goals, the protagonists delay the invasion by picking flowers because they have the ability to turn back time. Finally, the story ends with a blind crowd descending on the villa, now an abandoned property, with overgrown gardens and statues of the earl and countess entangled in thorns. The ending implies eternity and immortality.
What makes Bad Bunny stand out, besides the beautiful costumes, is that the most interesting thing about him is that he directly plays Count Alex himself in the story, which perfectly fits the sartorial theme of this year’s attire. Maison Margiela, which is characterized by deconstruction, customized a dark blue suit for Bad Bunny, deliberately revealing the outer seams. This wool suit is equipped with black grosgrain lapels, oversized shoulder pads and an ultra-tight waist, forming an hourglass shape. The figure is reminiscent of one of the indispensable elements of haute couture clothing: the corset. The whole set is paired with straight-leg pants with red stripes on the inside and animal-print Tabi boots, giving it an elf-like fairy tale look.
