City Aesthetics and Timeless Wisdom: Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Debut Campaign for Balenciaga
The Essence of the City Cities are more than mere gathering places; they are living entities where the lines, silhouettes, colors, and textures of both organic and inorganic matter shape the myriad lives within. Balenciaga recently unveiled its first campaign under Artistic Director Pierpaolo Piccioli. This debut not only highlights the unique confidence of women but also reinforces the allure of the brand’s two iconic bags: Le City and Rodeo, showcasing a classic charm rooted in Paris and urban life.
A Star-Studded Debut Following his critically acclaimed debut show, Piccioli leads this campaign photographed by Hanna Moon. The campaign stars three Asian icons—Roh Yoon-seo, Zhang Xiaofei, and Yang Chaoyue—each styling the Rodeo and Le City bags in their own unique way. The legendary “Motorcycle Bag,” which skyrocketed to fame in 2001, has been “re-calibrated” and officially named “Le City.” Defined by its rectangular silhouette, rivets, leather tassels, and prominent rugged stitching, the bag has been a favorite of stars like Annie Moon, Ayaka Miyoshi, and Claudia Schiffer. From avant-garde street style to urban timelessness, the bag reflects the organic and diverse nature of the city itself.
A Vision of Maturity and Insight In this latest campaign, the bags are captured both in still life and alongside the stars, set against the nostalgic backdrop of vintage leather car seats. Whether paired with a retro steering wheel, the textured elegance of a worn seatback, or the shimmering night view through a rear window, Piccioli’s vision becomes clear. Both the Le City and Rodeo exude the very essence of Balenciaga: a seasoned wisdom refined by time, a profound clarity that remains unshakeable after witnessing the ebb and flow of endless trends and city nights.
